Booze Friday

So the world has come somewhat to its senses and District Court Judge Tom O’Donnell has granted a license to pubs in Limerick from 6pm till 11.30pm on ‘Good Friday’ to cater for the rugby fans watching the match. In a country that now has a colourful multi cultured tapestry, it seems foolish that the whole licensed industry should come to a close for one particular religion. Pubs stay open on Hanukkah, Passover, Shabbat, the month of Ramadan, Buddhists Elephant Festival and of course the Scientology holiday Celebrity Day.

The Franciscan Friars in Limerick haven’t taken it well and have said that any Catholics who attend the match can no longer call themselves Catholics and can expect to face the wrath of God. With many seeing sport as a religion, perhaps it’s time for the other attendees to convert?

The Doggie Gaga Project

Inspired by Polaroid's “creative director” Lady Gaga, award-winning San Francisco dog photographer Jesse Freidin has created The Doggie Gaga Project, with the help of The Impossible Project.

He's snapped his pooches in a series of Haus of Gaga-inspired outfits. And it seems his doggie dress-a-like has become a media sensation.

Secret Boozing

Our neverending crusade to seek out the funtime boozers of this world continued last week, taking us to NYC where we came across this little treat. To enter you’ve to push through an old phone box on the inside of a hot dog joint and knock on the wall on the other side. It would be rude not to. pdtnyc but please don’t tell.

Sharpshock-ing!

Peter has been corralling hot things in club photos for the past couple years and the pics will finally find a home on this new site. Sharpshock is in the vein of the great club photography sites, www.dirtydirtydancing.com and www.megamegamega.com except Dublin-ified. The site launches March 30th at Crawdaddy, 8pm. See you there!

Blue hippy cats

This review of Avatar has caused quite a stir among animators. There is no credits, it just appeared as one guys review. Some people think it may be a project to bolster a CV. Whatever the reason for it it's very entertaining.

Ireland’s Alternanthem

Coincidentally the same morning I heard ‘My Lovely Horse’ played on the radio I found out that the man divine Neil Hannon and his Duckworth Lewis Method cohort Thomas Walsh have penned and recorded a charming ode to our beloved nation. Shorter, easier to remember it would definitely spare the Irish rugby squads lip synching to Amhrán na bhFiann during the 6 nations. Listen to the track on the Irish Times website here. Happy Paddy's Eve!

The Beatyard, talks, debates, stalls and craic

The Beatyard returns to Dublin's Twisted Pepper this Satuday. There'll be a few words from one of Ireland's leading techno lights Donnacha Costello as well as a debate on those infamous headshops. With another one of the contentious stores burning down last night it's clear action needs to be taken. Presumably considering the likeliness of a lot of the attendees close proximity to the nightclub industry we can expect a bit more insight on the subject than that provided by the average Joe Duffy's listener.

There will also be a screening of the new Banksy film "Exit Through the Giftshop" as well as music, food & fashion stalls. Deffo a nice alternative for those not interested in the match. Doors are 3PM, more info at www.thetwistedpepper.com

Anna Nicole Smith: The Musical

Camp, kitsch and a brim full of drama is what can definitely be expected from the new musical production based on the sensational life of ex-Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith. Penciled in to premiere in 2012, Smith’s life had fodder aplenty for the perfect tragic tabloid tale that include botox overkill, public breakdowns, a penchant for pensioners and ingesting a heap load of drink and drugs to beat the band. Dutch soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek has been cast to play the trainwreck life of Ms. Smith.

Let's Hear It For New Dorks

Check this geek anthem for 2010 by a guy who looks like a skinnier version of Michael Jackson on Bo’ Selecta. What’s not to like with killer line delivery, such as… “Startin’ big trends with the tweets that I pass on, You should follow me because I’m friends with Ash-ton”.

TOTW 35

Shane Mc Gowan and friends song for Haiti is out today and we urge you to download it as ALL proceeds go to Concern. Kudos to Shane and his partner Victoria Clarke who made the calls and got some great names is music (Paloma Faith, Chrissie Hynde, Nick Cave, etc…) and film (Johnny Depp no less) to feature on the cover of ‘I Put A Spell On You’. Let’s face it this is credible music that has grit , soul and not some gushy, schmaltzy and tiresome Simon Cowell standard Westlife edition with the predictable big key change. Don’t get us wrong, that hit number one and raised some funds desperately needed but music fans outside the realm of the top 10 desperately needed an alternative so they could happily play their small part by downloading a song to help. We also stumbled across this graphic that compares historic U.S. event death totals to Haiti's devastating loss to highlight the magnitude of the disaster. The track is available here and join the Facebook group.

Nike Kits The Boys In Green

No not Traps Army, just all the other Nike national teams that are ready to play ball in South Africa this Summer. Check out Nikes sweet press kits that include the new Brazilian World Cup jersey within a bottle. The jerseys themselves are made from upcycled plastic bottles, 8 bottles to be exact. Another nice detail to all of the 2010 World Cup Nike jerseys is that they have a secret message printed on the inside behind the teams crest, next to the hearts of players. The Brazilian one above says “orgulho e amor”, which is Portuguese for “pride and love”. Nice.
